Duplex Stainless Steel: Built for the Extreme

Duplex stainless steels are high-performance alloys combining austenitic and ferritic stainless steel properties. Known for their strength and corrosion resistance, they’re used in the most demanding industrial environments.

Structure and Properties

  • Mixed Phase: Roughly 50% austenite and 50% ferrite.

  • High Strength: Almost twice that of 304 or 316 stainless.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent against pitting and stress corrosion.

  • Weldability: Generally good, but requires careful control.

Popular Grades

  • S31803/S32205: Common duplex grades with balanced properties.

  • S32750/S32760: Super duplex grades for highly corrosive environments.

Applications

  • Oil and Gas: Pressure vessels, subsea piping.

  • Chemical Processing: Reactors, heat exchangers.

  • Desalination Plants: Filters, evaporators.

  • Pulp and Paper: Digesters, bleach washers.

Duplex stainless steels are the material of choice when reliability, strength, and corrosion resistance are non-negotiable.
